Álvaro

My name is Álvaro, I’m 30 years old, and I’m from a small region in the southeast of Spain called Murcia. I started playing jugger back in 2010 with some friends from high school, and since then I’ve been deeply involved in the Spanish jugger community.

I spent more than 10 years playing with my first team, Verracos, one of the pioneering teams in Murcia. During that time, we competed in all kinds of tournaments — from local leagues and regional events to national and international competitions, including world championships. One of the highlights was in 2017, when we managed to win all the national competitions in Spain in a single season. Over the years, I’ve participated in more than 100 tournaments and have been lucky enough to earn several gold medals, along with many silver and bronze ones.

After Verracos disbanded at the end of 2021, I joined my current team, Nómadas. Since then, we’ve continued competing at a high level and remain among the top teams in Spain. Besides playing domestically, I’ve also traveled to Germany more than 10 times to take part in some of the biggest tournaments there, sometimes with my team and sometimes with mixed teams of Spanish players.
What I love most about jugger is not just the sport itself, but the community around it — the friendships, the travel, and the way it connects people from all over the world. And that’s exactly what led me to you guys.
When I was planning my trip to Hong Kong, I remembered seeing some videos on Instagram about your community, which was just starting out at the time. I reached out, and you immediately welcomed me — something I’ll always appreciate.

My experience with you couldn’t have been better. From the very beginning, your hospitality was incredible — taking us on a hike to one of the highest mountains in the city, introducing us to amazing local food, and making us feel completely at home. I also had the chance to join one of your training sessions, where I could see firsthand how passionate and motivated you all are. It was great to share some tips about techniques and equipment, but more importantly, it was just a lot of fun playing together.
And then, a few months later, seeing some of you travel all the way to Spain to compete in the Spanish Autumn Cup — that was truly something special. Being the first Asian team to play a jugger tournament in Europe is an incredible milestone. You guys made history, and it was amazing to witness.

If I had to give any advice, it would simply be: keep going. You’re doing an amazing job growing the community and spreading jugger in Hong Kong. Stay consistent, keep learning, and most importantly, never forget to enjoy it.
I’m really looking forward to seeing you all again at the World Cup in Germany this September — I can’t wait to see how much you’ve improved!
